Deepak shares his remarkable professional journey, beginning as a quantum physicist with a PhD from the University of Florida, then becoming a research professor at Penn State University. He moved to California in 1996/97 to be the first person hired externally to start a program in computational nanotechnology at NASA Ames Research Center, where his work garnered significant awards. Driven by Silicon Valley's entrepreneurial spirit, he transitioned into a series of startups in clean environment, battery, and AI.
Our interview delves into his current venture, NuMorph AI Inc., which focuses on neuromorphic AI — a more biological or human-like form of AI. Deepak highlights that their analog system offers significant efficiency for low-power operation at the extreme edge, solving the high-power consumption and cloud dependency issues of conventional AI. Inspired by biological systems like honeybees, NuMorph AI Inc.'s patented technology focuses on making computation massively modular, like "Lego blocks," to capture biological efficiencies. Early applications include GPS-free visual navigation for indoor environments, mining, space, and warfare, as well as event-driven sensing cameras for 360-degree situational awareness and collision avoidance in robotics and drones.
